Placement: the nail line is not a suggestion

Nails driven there do double duty — they fasten the shingle and pin the top edge of the course below, so each shingle is effectively held by 8 fasteners. High nailing (above the line) misses the course below, halves the holding power, and is invisible once the next course covers it. Are staples okay for shingles?
